North Buckhead/Brookhaven Real Estate Essentials

North Buckhead and Brookhaven are adjacent communities north of Atlanta’s urban core. North Buckhead is a neighborhood within the district of Buckhead. Brookhaven became a city in 2012. Both communities have histories that date back to the pre-Civil War era. Today over 11,000 people live in North Buckhead. Brookhaven, however, has a population of over 54,000, making it the largest city in DeKalb County. North Buckhead and Brookhaven have many similarities: both are affluent communities with bucolic settings and upscale amenities, restaurants, and shopping. One difference is that North Buckhead public schools are part of Atlanta Public Schools, while Brookhaven is served by the DeKalb County School District.

In A Nutshell

Brookhaven, a northeastern suburban neighborhood of Atlanta, was one of the first planned golf course developments in the United States. It is on the list of National Historic Places and is a popular residential area with a mix of housing that includes smallish bungalows as well as larger single family homes, interesting townhomes, condominiums and modern lofts. Peachtree-Dunwoody Road separates Brookhaven from North Buckhead to the east and together they represent some of the most affluent areas of the entire city.

Walking, Biking, or Driving

Marta's red and orange lines serve the neighborhoods, so it is possible to avoid city driving, for the most part. You'll enjoy these neighborhoods on foot occasionally, but you'll definitely want to keep your car close for convenience, even if you only use it on weekends or to get to nearby parks and recreational facilities. If you love bicycling, jogging or taking your dog for a run, feel free to do so around the neighborhood.

The Scene

Buckhead has a reputation as a ritzy place; North Buckhead and Brookhaven fall in the same class but with a more residential feeling. Brookhaven has five city parks, one with a lake, and at least an equal number of celebrations and festivals. It may not have as many restaurants and clubs as some other neighborhoods, but you won't lack for activity if you settle here.

The Backstory

There are so many neighborhoods in Atlanta that it's hard to keep them separate. Brookhaven, however, is now a city. It became DeKalb County's newest municipality in 2012, but most people still consider it an Atlanta suburb. That's probably okay.
